The American Society of Anesthesiologists defines anesthesia as the "practice of medicine dedicated to the relief of pain and total care of the surgical patient  before, during, and after surgery."

Our site aims to answer many of your questions relating to our specialty. As anesthesiologists, we are unique because we provide medical care to all patients before, during, and after surgery. Our expertise is not limited to the operating room. We also see patients in the Intensive Care Unit and at the Center for Pain Medicine (CPM). At the CPM, anesthesiologists offer relief to those who suffer from acute and chronic pain.

The role of the anesthesiologist is extensive because we are responsible for monitoring and maintaining our patients' vital functions. This has allowed us to be involved in many medical sub-specialties including transplantation, obstetrics, orthopedics, pediatrics, critical care, cardiovascular, thoracic, and trauma medicine. Outside of the patient-care setting, many of our anesthesiologists are heavily involved in research. An interesting thing to note is that research-oriented anesthesiologists have made some of the most significant advances in medicine.
