If you are traveling to a hot, humid area, you will be exposed to several varieties of insects. Most travels, however, involve exposure to mosquitoes and other insects causing temporary pain, swelling, itching and redness - all of which usually subsides within a few days.

Nonetheless, you should plan to carry an insect repellent containing DEET as the active ingredient. Because of potential toxicity, products containing DEET should be used sparingly on children, though there are several new products on the market specifically formulated for the younger age group. Permethrin-containing products may be used on clothing and on bednets to avoid insect bites. Follow instructions on the containers for best results and remember water and perspiration reduce the effectiveness of repellents. Long sleeves, long pants and long socks also are of some benefit, especially if you plan to be outside in malarious areas between dusk and dawn. In addition, screened windows and the use of 18-mesh mosquito netting over your sleeping quarters are highly recommended if you are not sleeping in an enclosed air conditioned area.
