Emory Nursing Officer Awarded for Chemotherapy Handbook & International Training Workshop

Mary Gullatte, PhD, RN, APRN, associate chief nursing officer at Emory Crawford Long Hospital, has been awarded the 2008 APEX Publication Award of Excellence for the Clinical Guide to Antineoplastic Therapy: A Chemotherapy Handbook, for which she is the editor. The Oncology Nursing Society Publishing Division received the award from APEX this year in the book and e-book category.

The chemotherapy handbook provides cancer care professionals with detailed information on all aspects of chemotherapy administration. This is the second edition of the book.

"This is, indeed, an unexpected honor," says Gullatte. "After working for 31 years as an Emory nurse caring for cancer patients, I hope this handbook will aid and teach many other nurses and physicians about best practices and compassionate care for their patients."

Gullatte has published over 70 articles and book chapters, along with two books, during her extraordinary nursing career.

In continuing her teaching mission, Gullatte has been selected to conduct an international training workshop for approximately 200 oncology nurses at the Makati Medical Center in Makati City, Philippines, a new hospital dedicated to cancer patients. The five-day workshop, which begins on Oct. 27, will focus on clinical care and education. A grant from the International Union Against Cancer is funding this trip.

"I am excited to have the opportunity to go to the Philippines to teach others about cancer care from a global perspective," says Gullatte. "Working with other oncology professionals internationally helps provide a continuum of care for cancer patients around the world."

Gullatte will teach the workshop alongside a Filipino pediatric oncology nurse from St. Jude's Children's Hospital.
